The Japanese word “Hakuchumu“ is written with the characters meaning white, day and dream and means daydreaming. Daydreams are fantasies or delusions that have not actually happened.
“白昼夢* in the panopticon” is a performance and installation, which uses elements of butoh, live painting, video projection and live music. It was shown at Hošek Contemporary, Berlin in 2023.
Through the use of different materials and objects such as soil, acrylic paint, textile canvas and smoke a dream landscape is created in which the performers embody the struggle between control and care as well as personal and collective freedom.
The audience are seated along the four sides of the performance space. A top camera is placed in the ceiling above the performance space and the image live projected to the back wall. In this way the viewers are able to always have full view of each part of the performance. In the middle of the performance space another camera is placed on a rotating table together with a flashlight, recording the whole performance and the audience from the center point of view and in this way creating a panopticon where everyone can see what happens in the space, but is at the same time also equally visible to each other.
